Santorini: The Honest Review Nobody Writes
Yes, it's beautiful. Yes, it's crowded. Here's what I actually thought after five days on the most photographed island in the world.
Let me be honest with you, because that's what this blog is for. Santorini is extraordinary and exhausting in equal measure, and whether you love it depends almost entirely on when you go and where you stay.
I went in late October, which was the right call. The cruise ships had mostly stopped. The restaurants had space. The famous sunset at Oia, which in August apparently involves standing shoulder-to-shoulder with two thousand strangers, was something I watched with perhaps thirty other people, in something approaching peace.
The caldera views are genuinely unlike anything else on earth. The wine — the local Assyrtiko — is crisp and mineral and perfect with grilled octopus. The hotels carved into the cliff are some of the most dramatic rooms I have ever slept in. Go in October. Stay on the caldera side. Eat the octopus.
